The Bowie Boys -
Saved From Slaughter
The boys are ON THE TRAILER! They are currently en route to Mississippi. Thank you Hoofin and Haulin Equine & Livestock Transport for ensuring our sweet boys safety and comfort on their way to the farm! For those who may not know...
Tiny Tim (buckskin) is a two-year-old draft cross with a stocky build. Tim appears to have a condition known as carpal varus deformity, which essentially means he is bow-legged. Such deformities often occur in limbs that bear excessive weight, making them more common in larger breeds and crossbreeds. Typically, these issues can be corrected when the horse is a foal, as their legs are still flexible. His owners chose not to because "they didn't have the time" but they had time to dump him at auction where he was purchased by Bowie.
Hank the Tank (Red Bay) is a dainty quarter pony cross gelding. Although Hank is approaching his second birthday, he is significantly smaller than "Tiny" Tim. He is dealing with equine papillomas, commonly referred to as "grass warts." He will need to be quarantined for a while, and luckily, he and the boys can keep each other company during that time. EPV can take anywhere from 1 to 9 months to resolve. Since the other 3 had already been exposed to him at the lot, there’s no need to separate them at this stage.
No Name (Sorrel) now named Average Joe is facing a challenge with his hind leg. This condition is not something that many were eager to invest in to bail him from the kill pen. Without X-rays and a consultation with a veterinarian, it’s uncertain whether this issue will limit him to being a pasture companion for the remainder of his life.
Tag 4868 (Dark Bay) who is now Dapper Dan... Because hes going to be tall dark and handsome. It appears that Dan may have become entangled in the trailer or the panels while being loaded or unloaded. He has sustained a significant scrape on his back leg and is showing some signs of discomfort. If there is no improvement during the upcoming week of rest, we will arrange for an x-ray. Nevertheless, we remain hopeful that the injury is merely causing him some soreness.
We still have to raise the funding for their initial vet care which I will breakdown below!
$215 of $1,500 for Tiny Tim:
Sedation, Castration, Radiorgraphs, Vaccinations & Corrective Trim/Shoes
$900 for Dan/4868:
Sedation, Castration, Vaccinations & Trim
$700 for Joe/No Name:
Sedation, Radiorgraphs, Vaccinations & Trim
$500 for Hank/Unwanted:
Sedation, Biopsy, Vaccinations & Trim
I am sharing a link to our Chewy wish list along with the boys' Amazon wish list. While I am more than willing to provide for their needs, I must admit that our initial plan to rescue one horse expanded to two, to three and we ended up with 4...
I want to be transparent; while I WILL ENSURE THEY RECEIVE EVERYTHING NECESSARY, I would greatly appreciate any help with the supplies essential for their rehabilitation.
Most items are more affordable on Chewy, but there are a few that are slightly cheaper on Amazon, as well as some items that can only be found on our Amazon wish list. To give you a clearer idea of what we urgently need, here’s a quick list:
- Panacur Power Pack: Dewormer
- Tribute Essential K
- Standlee Alfalfa Cubes
- Tribute Synergize
- Chewy/TSC Gift Cards: These will help us purchase the food listed above.
- ProBios: Probiotics
- Redmond Daily Gold: This helps prevent and treat ulcers, especially as they transition from a stressful environment.
- Redmond Daily Red: Electrolytes
- ActiFlex: Joint supplements for our boys who are dealing with lameness issues.

Many may not know, and some may have forgotten, that my journey in rescue began with horses. I have rescued from kill pens with active slaughter contracts, auctions, and individuals...
Numerous individuals have attempted to explain the workings of the slaughter and auction pipeline to me this week. I truly appreciate your concern, I honestly do. However, I consider myself educated on this topic. I do not engage in pulling horses from lots that lack active contracts, as those horses are not immediately bound for slaughter. Instead, they are transported to an auction where they are dropped off to make room for new arrivals. Some of these traders posting as kill buyers even engage in trading horses with eachother. While I am not suggesting that once these horses reach the auction they are safe from ending up in a legitimate kill pen, but at that moment, they are not being shipped to Mexico or Canada. Unfortunately once a horse is in the auction pipeline, its hard to get out.
Let’s address the issue of "the horses you pulled not being in danger of being sent to slaughter." They were all owned by Bowie Livestock, a kill buyer who has an ACTIVE SLAUGHTER CONTRACT WITH MEXICO, which can be verified.
Additionally, it’s important to note that slaughter rates have increased by 14.8% compared to this time last year, primarily due to rising prices per pound. I recently had a DIRECT conversation with the largest kill buyers in the United States, who consistently ships the highest volume of loads each week. He verified the horses they weren't shipping when rates were low are now being shipped. While the situation for these horses may not have seemed dire to those living in a fantasy world, I WANT TO CLARIFY THAT MY INSIGHTS COME FROM INFORMED SOURCES WITHIN THE INDUSTRY, NOT JUST EMOTION.
The criteria for horses that are shipped to slaughter are quite minimal. Generally, they must have vision in at least one eye, be able to stand, and stallions are not accepted. This is why colts like two of these often undergo harsh unmedicated "cowboy castrations" by workers at the lot before being loaded onto trucks. Foals, on the other hand, are typically ripped from mom and dumped in feedlots to either grow older or perish. If they survive, they are shipped once they reach an appropriate age.
Many individuals fail to realize that actual kill buyers do not need to promote these horses. However, if they choose to invest time in advertising, they anticipate a greater return than what they would receive across the border, which is simply logical. Each week, there are HUNDREDS of horses being shipped that remain unseen because they are direct shipments. This occurs because these connections must be satisfied. Therefore, to those claiming 'we sent the trucks home empty,' that is not accurate. The lot still met its requirements with direct shipment horses; they simply did not receive any additional trailers of horses available to the public.
We pulled horses that weren't being pulled, fundraised for or inquired about. Three of them have soundness issues that we hope are fixable. One has a contagious issue that while isnt really a big deal... Isn't a selling point by far. We are not the rescues clearing lots by mass bailing, buying not bailing the desirable horses or purchasing horses not in danger from traders. I'm educated enough to know that... That isnt rescue work.
